  1. FLODRAW - Next Generation: Status Report

  3. I have been working on the next generation of FLODRAW since 
  4. the release of FLODRAW 2.2.  The next generation of FLODRAW 
  5. is a completely new program that will off many features 
  6. suggested by FLODRAW users.
  7.  
  8. The new program will be a diagramming program similar to the 
  9. current FLODRAW.  But the similarity is only in what the 
  10. program does.  The graphical interface is so completely 
  11. different that I will call it something other than FLODRAW.  
  12. It will be easier and faster to get your ideas on a diagram.  
  13. I haven't decided on a name yet.

  15. Right now I'm working with a prototype of the new FLODRAW 
  16. program.  There are still a lot of problems to resolve, but 
  17. I expect to have a version I can offer to registered users 
  18. by end of '92.

  20. Based on the prototype I've developed so far, here are a few 
  21. of the features that will be available in the next program.
  22.  
  23.     Mouse support.  The first release of the program will 
  24.     probably require a mouse.  I'll add keyboard support  
  25.     later.  Most functions can be selected from an icon bar 
  26.     rather than a menu.

  28.     EGA/VGA support.  CGA will no longer be supported since 
  29.     it can't provide the resolution necessary for the screen 
  30.     displays in the new program.  The first release may be 
  31.     VGA only.  But EGA will be supported as soon as 
  32.     possible.

  35.     Text processing.  Proportional fonts supported.  You 
  36.     will be able to enter text in two ways.  The first way 
  37.     is to type directly on the diagram as you do with 
  38.     FLODRAW.  The second way is to "link" the text to a 
  39.     location in the diagram so that you can edit the text at 
  40.     any time much the same way you would with a word 
  41.     processor.  This unique feature will provide some nifty 
  42.     text editing functions.

  44.     Multiple levels of zoom.  You will be able to edit the 
  45.     diagram at three levels of zoom.  A fourth level of zoom 
  46.     will allow you to easily make changes at the pixel 
  47.     level.

  49.     Ruler grids.  Grids will help you control the placement 
  50.     of symbols, lines, boxes, etc.  The grids will replace 
  51.     the "tab" feature in FLODRAW.

  53.     PCX file conversion.  The new program will read and 
  54.     write PCX format files as an option.

  56. There is some bad news, though.  Unfortunately, it is 
  57. necessary to make a complete break from the old program in 
  58. order to provide the improved features in the new program.  
  59. Compatibility with old FLODRAW diagrams will be 
  60. disappointing since the new program provides twice the 
  61. resolution of the old FLODRAW.  I do plan to provide a 
  62. conversion program to convert old FLODRAW files to the new 
  63. format.  However, be prepared for differences in text and 
  64. symbols between the old and new programs.

  67. look forward to releasing it later this year.
